Nintendo Switch Online Gets Three SNES Classics Today
Released Apr. 12th, 2024

Wrecking Crew ‘98 and two other classic titles from the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) era have joined the Nintendo Switch Online library.

Wrecking Crew ‘98 is joined by Super R-Type and Amazing Hebereke in joining a host of other NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Gameboy Colour games that are currently available to members of the standard $3.99 a month subscription service.

Wrecking Crew ‘98 sees Mario switch out his iconic red cap for a yellow hard hat and form a one plumber wrecking crew to bring down Bowser’s secret bases, and return sunshine to the land. To do so, the player will go head to head against a slew of villains in a series of Tetris-esque battles to destroy walls, and line up colored panels. Wrecking Crew ‘98 includes both the updated Super Famicon version of the game, and the classic 1985 Famicon title.

Super R-Type is a side-scrolling shooter that has the player take control of a one-person fighter to dodge obstacles, and blast through the hordes of ‘mutant extraterrestrials’ that fill the army of the invading BYDO Empire. Along the way you’ll find powerups to help take on brutal bosses that can destroy your fragile craft in a single strike, forcing you to restart your run from the nearest checkpoint.

In IGN’s 6/10 review of the Wii virtual console version of the SNES classic, we emphasised the unforgiving toughness of Super R-Type, while noting that “underlying all of these complaints is a game design that can still be solid and satisfying, so shooter fans shouldn’t be completely turned off”.

Finally, Amazing Hebereke is a quirky top-down view battle royale from the Super Famicon-era, that pits the player against up to four characters, resulting in a chaotic blend of special attacks, environmental hazards, and traps.
