The story focuses on Noctis Lucis Caelum, a prince of the nation of Lucis who was endowed by a power connected to the goddess of death. The last nation to hold a crystal and long locked in a prolonged cold war as the world's other nations having lost their own and in fear of Lucis' vast power, it is invaded by the military nation of Niflheim on the eve of a peace treaty between the two nations. Noctis and his companions are forced to flee from Niflheim's forces, working to defeat them and retake Lucis' crystal. During the course of the game, Noctis is forced to fight Stella Nox Fleuret, a woman who wields similar powers to him and shares a deep connection with him.
